July Color Of the Month– Cool Mint

(So sorry that I am terribly behind, I know that July is over!)

Welcome to my regular post on color trends!  This is our second installment– cool mint.  Alongside of these color posts here on the blog, I also have a corresponding board on pinterest, for you to see more examples of the shade in question–

There is a whole little range of color in the mint family, from the soft, milky quality of vintage jadeite; to the frosty blue-green tile here in our old house.  Quite a yummy and evocative little color it is….  It has a very fresh, fun and youthful feel, and that may be why it pairs so well with August’s upcoming color, lemon yellow.

**CLOSE PAINT MATCH**  I think there’s a fun little range of color here– think frosty, cool, soothing.  Go on the bluer side with Benjamin Moore’s “Marina Bay,” or swing to the greener end with “Citrus Green.”  They are even yummy together!  If you’re looking for a spray paint, Krylon’s ColorMaster line has two tones that will blend well with your palette, “Jade” (the blue-green) and “Pistachio” (the yellower-green).  I can’t speak as to the performance of this paint line, but they do look like they have a nice selection of colors.  I would coat a wooden bed in a little girl’s room (if I had one of those!) or on the walls in a small room like a bath (obviously!) or breakfast nook.

**SPOT IT ON**  The natural flowerbed-crowding herb that gives it its name– but not really.  Things like this make me wonder.  I think the smell of fresh mint evokes the cold, fresh quality this color inspires, hence the name.  But the color and the herb aren’t really similarly toned at all.  No, more actually– mint chocolate chip ice cream, I would say that its the perfect description of that color… however, if you crave this flavor, I would recommend you choose a natural (white) ice cream brand (like Breyer’s) that doesn’t add in the fakey color, your body doesn’t need it.  I know I’m not your mom or anything, but this color doesn’t seem to naturally appear on foods….  Drink it in with your eyes!

One of my favorite things about this house is that one of our vintagey tiled bathrooms is an extremely fetching shade of cool green, and this is not such an unusual thing.  (Picture of that tile is seen above, and there is a whole blog post about the room to be found here– www.lovenestdesign.com/i-mastered-the-bathroom/)  Or it shouldn’t be anyway, I know that oftentimes in our society pastel-colored tiled bathrooms are reviled but, SAVE THE PINK– AND MINT– BATHROOMS!  I really think they are quite charming, and such a fun (and telling) era touch.  I dunno, to my brain, a tiled bathroom just seems cleaner, fresher, *right.*  And I’m okay with being on the minority here.

**PAIR IT WITH**  All kinds of colors!    On the deep end is navies and greys, which ground the color and make it look very sophisticated and dramatic.  It’s youthful, energetic, and fun when paired with yellow; and with pinks and aquas its just plain Sanrio Surprises– cute!  Surprisingly it is not clashy it at all with limey greens, in fact, the header pic on this post will show you that.  Light green (lime) + light green (mint) = fresh.  Easiest is mint with white and aquas, it evokes a coolness that other colors can’t duplicate!  (Pic at right taken in a store, I think the reptile bag is Cole Haan?)

**CRAFT IT**  Gallery Glass paints by Tulip has a color called “Jadeite.”  (It is not accurately depicted on the label, but it dries as it should, more like the dishes.)  Scribblers tee-shirt paint in Seafoam green is pearlescent and pretty.  Micheal’s has some really swank washi tape that is utterly adorable, and again pairs the mint with yellow!

**EAT IT**  Knock back a mint julep (again, not the right color– serve it in a nice silvery julep cup, no one will know), maybe served with a couple of mint oreos?  I dunno.  Or make a creamy tzatziki– which is both minty-looking and subtly mint-flavored– and maybe serve up some falafel on pita.  Mmmmm… now *that’s* summer food!

**WEAR IT**  This color is actually pretty amazing on– it looks elegant and serene on someone with pale skin and fair hair; but is also stunning and complimentary on the darker range of ethnic and exotic skinned brunettes.  The only tip I would give is that if you’re paler, go deeper green, and if you have darker skin go with very light versions of the color, as in a soft seafoam pastel.  I really like this Sinful Color Professional nail color in “Mint Apple,” is subtly pearlescent.   (Although that name puts a gross taste in my mouth.  Above when I was talking about lime and mint together my brain said, “Yum, Mojitos!”  — another combo of lime and mint that sounds like it shouldn’t work but oddly does– but mint apple makes me want to yark.  The nail polish IS pretty though.)

**MY FAVES**  My favorite minty moments are the diamonds in my guest room, this lamp that I bought for my sister at Home Goods and then couldn’t give her, and always mint chocolate chip ice cream– on a sugar cone, please!

If you find it hard to commit to colors of the non-neutral variety, then mint could really be good for you.  It’s soft, it’s soothing, and it has great impact without being bright or bold.  If you’re tempted, choose something that you would change out seasonally or frequently, like throw pillows for your sofa.  The Room Essentials comforter shown below is only thirty dollars for a full size at Target– you’d be surprised at how it could freshen up a room!

And just because mint is sooo on the verge of hip right now, I’ve decided that I’ll send a little giftie pack to the first reader that pipes up to say that they’ve been to a mint-green colored wedding this Summer– bonus if it was paired with coral or yellow!  Don’t forget to snap some pics!

((Contest is CLOSED– I had friends pipe up on our facebook page!))
