Score of the Week! (#15)

This post should more likely be called “Score Of the Month!” since its the first one of its kind that I’ve posted in June, but hey, we’re keeping with the old theme.  I hadn’t been to any thrift stores all month, no chances.  It wasn’t an intentional lack of posting, it was just the lack of scores to talk about.  Fortunately, I now have way too many new things to talk about, since I managed to hit a miraculous *three* thrift stores this week!

On Sunday, I got to go to AmVets while Pan watched an in-theater Father’s Day movie, which– even though that sounds sort of sad, it is an awesome treat for both of us.  He got to go see the new Star Trek alone and Fox and I went to Michael’s and AmVets, very productive and fun for all three of us.  Monday I took the kid to my parents’ place, and thinking I was clever and taking a “scenic route,” I managed to make the trip last an extra hour and a half in duration.  I thank the Goodness that I was in a climate-controlled, music-supplying vehicle with new tires, ’cause it was a kinda sucky thing to do.  My kid was miraculously patient, lawdy.

The Essence Of My Drive Home-- Fluffy Clouds and Flaming Lips

” The Essence Of My Drive Home– Fluffy Clouds and Flaming Lips

Wednesday on my trip home alone from my parents’ place in Mid-TN, I got to meander and stop whenever *I* wanted– there was a certain lack of, “I need to go potty,” or “I’m so thirsty!” or even “Change this music, I hate it!”   (We listened to the Beastie’s Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2 the entire way there, barring the forty-five minutes or so while he was sleeping.  Don’t get me wrong, I DO love that album, but when you’ve managed to get yourself lost and have to take the twisty mountain roads in the twilighty hours before dark– lets just say my head was pounding to the beat of “Too Many Rappers.”  I will not choose that album again for a while.)   So yesterday on my home I got to poke along in my MIL’s very nice car, indulging in my intense Wayne Coyne crush, and I had the opportunity to stop for a nice lunch at a drive-through-free deli, and then pop in to one of Cookeville’s Goodwills.  Veeeery nice.   It’s been a long time since I’ve had a day that was dictated entirely by what I wanted to do, and man-oh-man, does it feel good.  It was like having a spa day of sorts.

And yesterday I *again* went to the AmVets, because I still had her car, the ability to dictate what I do for a few hours, and a few bucks in cash left….  I gotta use that opportunity while it is there!

Dollar Tees For Capes

Dollar Tees For Capes

I got lotsa, lotsa, lotsa stuff.   So much stuff that I’m going to break it into two posts (as it is doubtful I will get out next week).  Let’s just jump in, shall we?!

I had been searching for large, colorful t-shirts with no text/images on the backs, to make capes for the little guy’s upcoming birthday celebration.  We’re doing a generic superhero theme, and the capes will be favors for the attendees.  I’d been having trouble accumulating what I felt would be enough shirts for my conversion project, and I just happened into the right place at the right time.  The Cookeville Goodwill had blue tags for ninety-nine cents, and used clothes are tax free.  I got a huge bunch of useful old tees!  Great colors too!  They are now spinning in my strippy wash (reg. detergent, cup of vinegar, TBSP of blue dawn, extra rinse cycle) even right as I type, so that I can set about to turning them into fun capes in the upcoming week.  Yay!  These just may end up as one of my coolest party favors yet!

Cheap Super Jewels

Also purchased for my use at Fox’s party is this wacky pair of red (eighties?) earrings in a sort of “POW” shape– I mean, c’mon, FIFTY CENTS!– and the cutest Pac-Man blue ghostie.  I don’t think he’s vintage, likely from Forever 21 or Hot Topic or something, but still.  I will likely try and build my entire outfit for the day of the party around this one pair of earrings.  (Oh, you know I’ll do it!)  The ghost isn’t really superhero related at all, but will still probably show up on my ensemble as well.  Just because it is colorful and Fox will dig it, and I’m the party boss.  I say it can go, so it can, dagnabbit!

Plastic Wall Dec 1

Plastic Wall Dec 1

I got not one but *two* of these more-detailed-than-usual plastic wall doohickeys, and oddly, they aren’t very large, only about eight inches tall each.  It has been my experience that usually when they are this detailed, they are also pretty big, but these aren’t.  The first one pictured of the teapot, basket of violets, muffins, and teacup will be painted straightaway (in fact, it’s already painted, tee hee) in a solid color for hanging in the downstairs bath with the rest of my plasco collection.  I am surprised every time at how updated and modern these funky things look with a fresh coat of bright paint.  (You’ll just have to wait and be surprised later!)  This one is a little bit off of theme from what I normally pick up, but its small size and details charmed me.

The other of these plastic wall doodads that I bought at the same time, is the first I’ve gotten that I likely won’t repaint a solid color, I find it pretty charming in its current coloration.  The checkerboard hearts are sooo eighties-version-of-the-fifties, but I’m all good with it!  I will admit that I am a little tempted to take a small brush and create/ highlight some details, but I haven’t yet.  I keep thinking about making that popsicle a more realistic color, like a shade of orange, or even redder, and I want to put chocolate chips in that mint ice cream…  It seems to NEED those little irregular chips.  Little things like that, but overall I like the concept and even the colors.  It will *not* be going in with the rest of the solid-painted, plastic whatnots, but upstairs in the kitchen with the rest of the cupcake and ice creamy goodness, where it will fit right in with its kitschy compadres.   So cute, right?  A buck each plaque!

New Coral Bud Vase

New Coral Bud Vase

At the first of the two AmVets visits, I got this wee coral bud vase for my guest room– it is SO CUTE next to that lamp, they look like they were made to go together.  It is unmarked, but I’m certain its vintage, just from the heft and feel of it.  Its still in great condition, no chips or anything, and there is no crazing, so I have no worries about putting water in it.  It was ninety-eight cents!  Love it when that happens….

Peachy Sheets

Peachy Sheets

I also got a complete set of sheets for that room from that first AmVet’s visit, they are reeeeally soft, crisp cotton, and the peach shade is lovely with what I’ve already got happenin’ in there, if I do say so m’self.  (The new-to-me set is the folded pile in the front of the pic to the left.)  I have not tried them on the bed yet, but we are seriously crossin’ our fingers that they are going to fit perfectly and be an actual, useful, functioning second set of sheets for the guest room.  I’m still on the lookout for a flannel sheet for that space for the colder months, but I’m in no hurry about it as of now, we know we have plenty of hot to do before we need snuggy sheets for in there, so I have time.

Lastly, I have another wee pottery vase that could *also* go well in the guest room, but it won’t be going in there.  Instead I have it slated to be displayed– somehow– with my green and yellow pottery collection.  You know what’s funny?  I thought I collected aqua pottery… I guess I always intended to, but I got to thinking about it– I can’t really recall any.  I have two identical sort of aqua-y glazed flower pots that sort of look like a cupcake liner, but those will likely end up in the kitchen for that reason… other than those, I’m drawing a blank.  I haven’t really unpacked my pottery collection yet because I intend to paint my china cabinet, but I really need to go ahead and get that stuff out… I’m losing touch with what I already have….

Little Tiny Green Vase

Anyway, oddly, this makes the fourth green-glazed vase with a mottled finish and measuring under six inches– pretty specific collection developing there, eh?  Kinda weird, but hey, I love it, I hope to attract more, really.  I could go crazy with stuff like this.  In fact, that makes me think I may need to start a new feature, where I show off collections…  not just mine, but maybe friends, too?  What do ya’ll think?

And don’t forget, piping up here through the end of June will automatically enter you into my cute little crafty tin giveaway!  Thanks for visiting!
